International Conservation Corps Provides Support to Bahamas National Trust for Co-Management of San Salvador National Park

Over the past year, three members of the International Conservation Corps, Mel Turner, Derek Thompson, and Mark Haddock, worked closely with officials of the Bahamas National Trust to prepare a co-management policy and then a co-management agreement between the National Trust and a community group.

The overall policy was developed through discussions with other Bahamian government agencies, National Trust staff, and communities throughout the Bahamas. Once approved, the policy was then applied to San Salvador National Park, the first landing place of Christopher Columbus. The International Conservation Corps team prepared a draft agreement based on discussions with the community group on San Salvador Island. The group had been instrumental in convincing government to establish the national park. Negotiations between the Trust and the community group were held on the draft agreement, with International Conservation Corps assistance, and the discussions resulted in a signed agreement in October, 2018.

Previously, International Conservation Corps had assisted the National Trust by preparing the draft management plan for the National Park as well as management plans and park proposals.
